Natasha
03:17
|

Natasha has come
up to the window
of the courtyard
and has opened it wide
to let the air
into my room.
A strip of grass
between the wall
so green and bright
beneath the sky
so clear and bright
all this I see.
Natasha has come
up to the window
there is sunlight around her
and life if good
and blue and green
out in the courtyard.
May all who live
around me now
and all to come
remove the evil
and the oppression
and the violence.
And may they dream
before their windows
on their loved ones
come up to them
that a day like this is dawning
when we'll know life in its fullness
and enjoy it in its wonder
and delight that we have wakened
so peaceful to our sleep.

Easter Island
04:08
|
|||
Each time we wake up in little rooms.
All cold and dark, they show their bones.
So many times to come to life.
So many times, so many times, but always here.
Rich parents make their children rich.
Rich parents make my family poor.
I think about this in the night.
The rats are dancing in the wall.
They're singing something's wrong in New York, New York.
They sing it's worse in Detroit.
O Lord, can Cleveland yet be saved?
We don't hear nothing from LA.
The poison in the air is grey.
The poison in the water black.
The poison in the heart is white.
The poison in the blood is red.
No time to think, just get the door.
No time to pack, just start the car.
Just leave the television on.
We'll let them think we're coming back.
They're singing time to head for Easter Island.
Time to breathe an air that's free.
If we make it, we'll start over.
If we're lost, we'll drown in blood-warm seas.

Left Behind
03:49
|
|||
I was left behind.
That's how it happened,
how I got here.
They went on without me,
and I was left behind.
Waiting passes slowly
left behind. Behind,
waiting is lonely
wondering will I know them
when they come back for me.
I don't see myself clearly any more.
I don't know what my face is like.
But still I go on singing.
Returning always
a little more worn out
to the same words
like a lost man in a desert
coming back on his own steps
circling.
I was left behind.
That's how it happened,
how I got here,
wondering will they know me
when they come back for me.

Oasis
03:30
|
|||
Why is it when I'm with you
I think of an oasis?
I've never seen a desert
or gone thirsty for an hour.
You're palm trees in the moonlight,
the air is cooling quickly
but you have laid a fire
you're an oasis.
What is it when I'm with you
makes me happy just to be there
and like a weary traveler
say I'll lay my burden down?
You're a starry tent of midnight sky
it's more than rest you offer
in a world that dries the sand
you're an oasis.
And though I must be leaving soon
on a road you cannot share
I won't forget the feeling of finding
in my desert you were waiting for me there.
